Investigation for a University

Relating to allegations of racism and misogyny

Bond Legal were commissioned by a University to conduct an investigation into complaints and counter-complaints of racism, sexism and discriminatory micro-aggressions. The allegations were made by students against other students and included claims that the University, and certain of its senior staff, had enabled or encouraged racist behaviours.

A number of the allegations had been posted online giving rise to concerns about reputational damage for the University. We were required to interview witnesses, consider a large quantity of documentation and produce a written report detailing our findings.

The nature of the allegations, and concerns expressed by some witnesses about their safety, meant that a sensitive approach was required, whilst ensuring that the investigation was both thorough and robust. Our report included a number of detailed recommendations, which included proposals as to how the University could strengthen its disciplinary code and complaints procedures.
